To all BCESD & CRUHSD community stakeholders:

As you may be aware, Gov. Doug Ducey issued a series of executive orders Monday afternoon as part of Arizona's COVID-19 response. One of those orders delays the start of the in-person school year until at least August 17. There are both exceptions and restrictions.

Both the Bullhead City Elementary and Colorado River Union High School Districts have had task forces working on reopening plans and scenarios since Gov. Ducey ordered campuses closed in mid-March. Both Districts' task forces had recommendations that had been, or were about to be, presented to governing boards for approval, based upon guidelines this month from the Arizona Department of Education. BCESD & CRUHSD school years had been scheduled to start July 29. Traditional, online and hybrid scenarios had been explored.

The Governor's announcement on Monday came without warning to most Arizona school districts. As a result, neither BCESD or CRUHSD could legally discuss the executive orders at length during Monday night's school board budget presentation meetings. Superintendents Carolyn Stewart (BCESD) and Todd Flora (CRUHSD) briefed their separate boards and explained that the task forces will have to regroup before any decisions are made.

Both BCESD and CRUHSD appreciate the patience of parents, students, faculty and other stakeholders as additional information comes in from the Arizona Department of Education, and before revised reopening plans can be presented to the governing boards and public.

The Governor's entire executive order pertaining to schools may be found at https://azgovernor.gov/sites/default/files/eo_2020-44.pdf .
